Erectile dysfunction is diagnosed by conducting a sexual history, a psychological history, a medical examination, and some laboratory tests. Your doctors will have these done before he makes a treatment decision. When these tests are all done then the doctor will be able to discuss with you what is really happening and what you can do next to treat it problem.
Normally the first thing your doctor will do is to get a sexual history from you. This will cover you’re a number of things including:
• Whether or not you have had and problems having an erection and keep that erection for a long enough time to engage in sex.
• Whether your erections last long enough for your partner to have an orgasm.
• How long you have had the problem and did it come as a result of a specific event.
• Details of any medication you may be currently taking or have taken in the past (this will include vitamins and supplements), and any operations you may have had.
• Information about any disorders you may have.
• The level of alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and illicit drugs used.
How To Diagnose Sexual Dysfunction In Men
Some basic psychological evaluation will be done and this will look for signs of depression, anxiety, stress, and other disorders. Information on you level of sexual desire, relationship problems, changing moods, and how the present issue is affect your relationship with your partner.The doctor will then order a physical examination. This is important in order to confirm any information given concerning your medical history. This examination will be focused on your genitals, the nervous, urinary and vascular systems. Any unknown disorder or disease will also be revealed.
Not all men will need to do laboratory testing but it is used to help find the underlying cause of impotence. Tests that will be performed include:
Blood tests. These will check your testosterone levels, thyroid function, glucose levels, and your liver and kidney function. A blood count is also done to determine if anemia is present.
Urinalysis. Here your urine will be checked for the levels of sugar, protein, and hormone. This will show the presence of diabetes, kidney problems, and testosterone problems.
Erectile tests. These will analyze erectile function by looking at things like the nerves, blood vessels and the whole penis itself.
Imaging tests. This usually involves examining your penis and testicles using an ultrasound. This will show if there is a venous leak, indications of artherosclerosis, erectile tissue scaring and also blood flow.
Other tests. Once the medical examination, psychological and physical tests are done if there is still no clear indication of ED and its causes other test maybe done. These will include nocturnal penile tumescence test, nerve test, and pelvic blood flow test.
After all these tests are done the results will be analyzed and discussed with you. A diagnosis will be made and you will be informed as to your possible course of action. If there are any risk factors found they will also be pointed out. A proper diagnosis of impotence or erectile disfunction is critical before trying any synthetic medications for ED.
